Choosing storage for research data

Oxford is a complex federated organisation, which often leads to a wide range of choices for researchers. This is the case for options for where to store research data.

Below is a collection of some of the services available, that can be filtered on a number of criteria (described at the bottom of the page).

Definitions for filters:

Available to:  Who can use the storage? (Departmental provision is sorted by division.)

Suitable data: What sorts of data is the storage/service approved for? For guidance, see Classify and handle University data securely and for examples of the kind of data that falls into each category please see Annex 1 of the Information Classification Policy.

Capacity: If you know how much data you have (or will have), can the service handle this volume? (Select closest choice.)

Oxford collaborators: Will the storage/service let you share with collaborators across the University?

External collaborators: Will the storage/service let you share with collaborators outside of the University?

Storage management: Is the storage owned by an individual (like OneDrive), or allocated/managed at a project level?

Access methods: How can the storage be accessed by, or presented to users?

Cost to user: Is there a direct cost for usage?
